Community Fund – The Yard – November update

With October over, our Halloween decorations were officially taken down, and our play team focused on our next event: Bonfire night. For a lot of the disabled children and young people who use our service, going to a public fireworks or bonfire night is rarely possible, especially with the loud noises of the fireworks. We decided a few years ago that we would hold our own, fireworks free event for all our members. In the week leading up to the event some of the schools who were in for their play sessions helped out by making firework artwork so that the place was ready for the night. We got big sheets of material and put paint rollers out with lots of bright colours. It was great to see everyone getting involved and taking part.

On the night, our play team built a big fire in the middle of one of our sandpits and we had the Edinburgh University Brass band in to play for an hour. It was a lovely atmosphere and all of the children really enjoyed seeing the fire! We were also able to provide hot dogs plus tea and coffee for everyone and we had some great volunteers in to help make sure that everyone got something to eat. It was a great evening and now we are all starting to focus on Christmas, with three parties planned for our members in December.

Community Fund – The Yard – October update

October has been a fun filled month at The Yard and as it was the Edinburgh schools holiday for two weeks we had lots of families in for family sessions.

Over the last couple of weeks, we have been busy decorating the place for Halloween and most of the play sessions have involved creating fun and spooky decorations! At our 4-9s drop in session, we decided that rather than following the traditional trends and carve pumpkins the children would paint them and cover them in glitter. There was glitter everywhere, but the pumpkins looked absolutely amazing.

Our early years session also followed the Halloween theme and all the children helped to make pumpkin soup and bread.

We finished our Halloween celebrations with all three of our Teenage Clubs dressing up for our Halloween party in the evening. There were lots of fun games including dunking for apples, eating doughnuts off the string and of course spooky Halloween dancing!

Now that Halloween is over, we are looking forward to hosting our Bonfire Night next Wednesday!

Community Fund – The Yard – August update

With summer holidays coming to an end, The Yard in Edinburgh was closed in August for essential maintenance for ten days. This gave us a chance to refresh the indoor and outdoor play area and we managed to upgrade our popular bedswing, solardome and sensory room.

Before we closed for maintenance, we celebrated International Playday by holding our very own Hayday, Playday. Our playteam pulled out all the stops to decorate the place with hay bales, wooden horses and cardboard cut outs that made it seem like The Yard had been transported to the Wild West. Our senior playworker Ivan set up a big Teepee structure in the garden. It was a lovely day, and the hay created an amazing play experience for all the children who enjoyed crawling through it, ripping it up or chucking it on each other! We had so much hay we were still playing with it a week later before we called Gorgie Farm who came to take the remaining hay away. It was a great day, and it inspired our playteam to plan lots of fun play sessions for September and October!

Community Blog – The Yard – July update

There have been lots of fun and exciting summer activities happening at The Yard over July, with lots of our members coming along to our drop in family sessions every day of the week. This month our 18-25s transition club have been organising lots of fun Saturday evening activities which included hosting their very own ‘Y in the Park.’ This has been an annual event for the 18-25s club for three years now, but this year it was shaping up to bigger and better than ever. With the help from a couple local businesses and volunteers, The Yard was transformed with a main stage, barbecue area and an indoor and outdoor dance floor. Luckily the weather stayed dry and the night was kicked off by some of our young adults singing their favourite pop songs (including a number of Little Mix hits). Everyone was soon up on the dance floor, and enjoying the barbecue and ice lollies. The playteam had arranged for two local bands to come along and sing, and everyone had a great time dancing and listening to them.

Thanks to the money that we receive from the Vegware community fund, we are able to continue to organise these events for all the children and young people that attend our youth clubs.

Community Fund – The Yard – June Update

Summer holidays are fast approaching and everyone is getting ready at The Yard for another busy July and August. During one week over the summer holidays, we see around 250 families using our family drop in sessions. The Yard is open for our families Monday – Saturday, with a number of playschemes in the area also using it throughout the week.

This month our Tuesday girls club have had a very full schedule, and they hosted our first ever volunteer celebration at the beginning of the month. As part of National Volunteers Week, the club wanted to recognise the amazing time and commitment that The Yard volunteers have given up over the year. All the girls at the club loved hosting the evening, with some helping to serve the food and drinks and a number of the girls prepared thank you speeches.

The Tuesday girls club playteam leader Sudha said, ‘it was great to see everyone involved and there were lots of hugs and kind words exchanged by everyone.’ The girls loved it so much that they are looking for a date to hold a night for their parents and carers.

The Tuesday girls club also had a visit at the end of the month from the animal man. The animal man visits lots of our clubs throughout the year, and all of our disabled children and young people love having the experience of getting to hold and feel all the animals. He usually brings a wide variety of animals including ducks, snakes, spiders and turtles.
