Community Fund – roWAN – November update

Growing Award Report for Vegware

November 18th 2016

On 16th November we heard we have been successful in getting 12 months funding from Awards for All – which is fantastic! In addition to the baseline support we are currently offering this will allow us to:

  • Increase staff covering the project from 2 very part-time posts (about 8 hours a month) to up to 4 hours a week until December 2017
  • Support 10 new schools to start the Growing Award over the next 12 months
  • Continue to support those that are currently doing it, including produce and present certificates to those that request them
  • Deliver 3 twilight/CPD sessions across Highland in early 2017
  • Promote the Award at events and through on-line support and materials
  • Develop the Award for adult groups and those independent of schools
  • Identify and train 3 volunteers, or those working for other organisations to support schools further afield than Inverness/East Ross area
  • Work towards making the Award self-sustaining by early 2018.

Community Fund – roWAN – October update

“Our Food, Our World, Our Future”

Our main activity since the schools went back in August was producing a display and materials to take part in the “Learning for Sustainability” event organised by Highland Councils’ education steering group. The theme of the event was “Our Food, Our World, Our Furture” and consisted of a keynote speaker,  workshops, market place – in which the Growing Award was promoted, and a wonderful global cafe. See poster below.

There were several schools asking about the Growing Award and they will be contacted as soon as the schools are back after the October break to see how  RoWAN can support them.

Community Fund – roWAN – June update

The Growing Award was promoted to all Highland schools in October 2015 and as a result about 25 schools responded asking for more details about the Award. As RoWAN had no funding at that time to support schools directly each school was sent the Award information sheet and pupil checklist , along with an invitation to email if they required any further assistance.

By June 2016 several schools had been in touch to say they were either doing the Award independently and using the structure to suit their situation or wished to have certificates awarded to pupils who had followed the Award for nearly nine months.

The schools receiving certificates in 2016 are:

Grantown Grammar School – 3 Bronze (Second year)

Carbost Primary School – 8 Bronze

Eigg Primary School – 2 Gold (Second year)

Smithton Primary School – 1 Bronze, 11 Silver.

The funding from Veware is now allowing us to support schools directly, update our information and consider adapting the Award for use by adult groups. In September we shall be promoting the Award at an education event in Inverness. We will highlight the fact we will be providing  a more comprehensive project to schools and other groups over the academic year 2016-17,and shall be evaluating the successes of the Award.
