Community Fund – Edinburgh Scrapstore – September Update

picture1As the seasons change we have been concentrating on strengthening our links with educational establishments and other recycling organisations. We are soon to be having visits from art pupils from Forrester High, and have been in talks with Changeworks and Waste and Recycling team at Edinburgh University and Voluntary Arts about ways we can work together.

And they will be put up on the wikihouse as soon as it is in situ at Tollcross primary. We are hoping to be starting mosaic projects with Dalry primary in the coming months.

The biggest news is that we have to move from our current site! and as such the scrapstore will be having to close a short while to get ready for the move. We will still be holding open workshops in the bus. The bus has now moved next to Grove 1 community garden and the junk kids playground – both of whih will be utilising the bus too, for seedling growing, workshops and craft sessions.

Community Fund – Edinburgh Scrapstore – August Update

June started off with scrap workshops off site at the Meadows festival, we made suncatchers with old cds and lots of trimmings, buttons, shells, paint, glitter…..it was so beautifully sunny they looked glorious spinning in the wind.  Later in the month there was a dreamcatcher workshop held on the scrapstore bus. This workshop  was part of the cycling festival and was hosted by upcycled world –  particpants made some excellent dream catchers from old bike parts, wool and threads.  It’s great for the bus to be used by other groups, it’s a real asset for community art.

Community Fund – Edinburgh Scrapstore – May Update

Picture1The scrapstore has had a busy month of May. From doing our mosaic workshps with Tollcross P6 kids to opening the doors to the scrapstore weekly – welcoming new members and trying to keep up with sorting out donations. We’ve now got regular donations from Edinburgh Art Framers and the Edinburgh Tile Studio – so bundles of coloured mount board, groovy frames and tiles galore!!

The P6 Tollcross kids were fantastic, they produced some beautiful mosaics which will be putting up on the gable ends of the Wikihouse in the Grove community garden for all to see. Watching kids getting really engaged in learning an art form they’ve never tried before is a pleasure to observe. They drew some amazing designs and with a little help turned them into mosaic panels. They also throughly enjoyed being allowed to break up the tiles with a hammer.

Community Fund – Edinburgh Scrapstore – April Update

So spring/summer days are here and we’ve had lost of fresh energy and momentum at the scrapstore and workshop bus. The bus was featured in the Evening news and Scotsman as creative reuse of an old bus, you can read the article here:

http://www.edinburghnews.scotsman.com/news/old-bus-given-new-life-as-one-of-a-kind-creative-workshop-1-4102088

The bus held it’s first workshop at the Spring Fling, an event hosted by all the projects on site, with over 300 people attending on the day.

The bus was home to a mosaic workshop using old broken tiles.  Kids drew designs that were transferred into woodenboards and then mosaiced.  We managed to finish two boards and started two others. The rest of the mosaics will be finished in open public workshops every Saturday and by kids from Tollcross primary school who are coming soon to learn mosaic techniques. Once finished the wooden boards will be displayed on the outside of the community wikihouse for all passers by to see and admire!
