We are offering our lovely fruit plates for sale as Christmas Gifts, you can choose or order the kind of fruit you would like at a price that suits you, they are very pretty, good value and healthy too! And we have a new idea with ‘cookie dough with a cookie cutter’ a gift to give that makes nice celebration biscuits with a recipe and everything you need to make them.

The shop is open for business as usual and is a friendly hub for a chat in the middle of the neighbourhood. We will be taking our Christmas orders now for lots of lovely fruit and vegetables for the Christmas Dinner.  We do take a break for a couple of weeks to ensure the volunteers and staff get a well-earned break. Several local projects came together to provide the venues and activities – Broomhouse Health Strategy Group, The Broomhouse Centre, The Big Project, St David’s Church and The Big Project There were over 200 local people at the event, with many volunteers who made the day possible. We had fun with food with an outdoor BBQ and indoors preparing fresh fruit faces and fruit kebabs and some tasty cooking. There were lots of entertainments on the stage with our local DJ, live bands and Big Project Choir, Book Bug singing with the younger children. There was a taster session for our new Dance Aerobics group. Stalls from interesting health and wellbeing groups and charities. We also continued our ‘Community Chat’ with Napier University supporting a local community survey.. Out of doors there was a bouncy castle and the Fire Services brought their Fire Engine and Fire Officers to offer for the families safety advice and families see and sit inside the Engine. We were pleased to be able to offer all the activities free for the community .

Other August activities included the end of the ‘Summer Programme’ activities. Our older adults had a very enjoyable trip on public transport  to the City Art Centre ‘A-Z’ Exhibition. We had a nice tour from the staff, which added to the experience. There was great fun at with some ‘Family Outdoor Exercise’ and we got some sunshine.

Community Fund – Broomhouse – December Update

BHSG Shop and volunteers

In December our volunteers and BHSG staff had a fantastic festive outing to Dumfries to visit the ‘The Usual Place’, which is a local community project. Their local team that created the café and training kitchen in Dumfries a few years ago had previously come to find out how we run our BHSG services to get some ideas from us in Broomhouse. So we really enjoyed getting in the minibus and travelling over to the South West of Scotland to see and experience their wonderful community cafe. We had a delicious lunch, a tour and a wander down to the very pretty town, with a walk by the river. Highly recommend a visit there.

Tasty Bites Thursdays – we had our ongoing generous donations from ‘Tesco Fareshare’ and shared many tasty recipe bags with our service users in the shop.

2017  –We are currently promoting and planning our new term of exercise and cooking activities starting in January, we are delighted to say that Nation Lottery have awarded us four years of funding to help us offer our activities in the local community.  We had a nice break over Christmas and New Year to give our volunteers a well-deserved holiday.

Lots of young people and their families have enjoyed Cooking up a Story, all our regular groups( walking and chair exercise) have new members and many longer term users too. We are promoting out newest class ‘Duo’ to the neighbourhood, parents/friends and children come along to exercise together in pairs or with is if they come along themselves, while the children play nearby. It takes place in the gym at Wester Hailes( E4L) on a Monday, great fun and is a short high intensity session. Free of charge .

It is a half hour of high intensity workout, and already proving very popular.  Parents can bring their children to the group; the babies can stretch out on the mats and the older children play in the hall while the adults exercise in pairs, helping to motivate each other with Alicia’s guidance and some great tunes. Plenty room for all.
