Community Fund – Edinburgh Scrapstore – August Update

June started off with scrap workshops off site at the Meadows festival, we made suncatchers with old cds and lots of trimmings, buttons, shells, paint, glitter… was so beautifully sunny they looked glorious spinning in the wind.  Later in the month there was a dreamcatcher workshop held on the scrapstore bus. This workshop  was part of the cycling festival and was hosted by upcycled world –  particpants made some excellent dream catchers from old bike parts, wool and threads.  It’s great for the bus to be used by other groups, it’s a real asset for community art.

he rest of summer has been donations, donations and more donations! Big donations both from individuals – 30 massive bags of fabric from just one donor and from businesses – stacks of beautiful tiles. We are running out of space!! But thankfully some artists came and chose lots of the scrap material to create décor for various festivals and shows and we’ve started making connections with groups such as Inspire crafts(craft workshops for adults with physical and  learning disabilities) and the Edinburgh Collage Collective…..we’re happy to see so much of these scrap materials being diverted from landfill and being used in creative ways……

July and August we’ve been busy trying to finish the mosaics for the wikihouse, the wikihouse will be moving to the playground of Tollcross Primary where it will be used as a lovely outdor classroom. As we held the mosaic workshops earlier in the year with the children of Tollcross primary we thought it would be great to finish off the larger panels so the wikihouse can be a mosaic splendour for the chilldren and they can admire their work every day in the playground.
